The Unst Partnership was established in January 2000 by the Unst Community Council, Shetland Islands Council and Shetland Enterprise Company in response to the need for economic regeneration on Unst, due to the announcement of the drawdown at RAF Saxa Vord and the previous closure of the airport, leading to the loss of 250 jobs and the rapid depopulation of the island. The Unst Partnership is committed to addressing the recent decline in the Unst economy, and coordinating the implementation of the Unst Plan. The Unst Plan envisages a long term programme of economic regeneration in Unst, focussed on Broadening and Deepening the Economic Base on Unst, Promoting the Distinctiveness of Unst, and Maximising the Benefits of Continuing Activity at RAF Saxa Vord. The Unst Partnership also aims to provide a focus for information, advice and support for all community development initiatives being investigated or undertaken on Unst. The Unst Partnership is formally constituted as a company limited by guarantee with charitable status.
