Notes

CraigOwl Communities was set up in 2002 to help disadvantaged people in disadvantaged communities by providing learning and employability opportunities. We currently provide learning centres in three communities in Dundee, providing ICT, literacies, employability and personal skills to local people who are not engaged in mainstream learning or training. We also develp employment opportunities through social enterprise by operating two cafés in Fife and an innovative IT support project for voluntary sector organisations in Dundee and Tayside. A recent venture is the development of a blended learning package of soft skills and employability skills created around a web-based interactive package and enhanced as appropriate by remote support and face-to-face training. We operate across four sites in Dundee and two in Fife (Kirkcaldy and Crosshill) with around 20 staff. Our inclusion projects are non-mainstream but have been funded as special projects by Communities Scotland (Futurebuilders), Scottish Enterprise (New Futures Fund), Jobcentre Plus Action Teams, Dundee City Council Adult Literacies Project and Working for Families, local Housing Associations, ESF Objective 3. We have also charitable trust funding and won a major Microsoft Community Learning (Unlimited Potential) Award in 2004. Each of our social enterprise projects aims to be self funding within one to three years of launch. CraiOwl has an interest in developing further employability projects and social enterprises, particularly working in partnership with other orgnaisations.
