Notes

Common Wheel was set up in 1999 to address the lack of meaningful therapeutic activity for people of all ages experiencing mental health problems. The idea came from 'Tools for Life' a project in New York which gave disadvantaged children the opportunity to engage in real structured activity and regain their self esteem by repairing old bikes. From the workshop in Maryhill in the North of Glasgow, Common Wheel recycles old bicycles and transforms them into high quality machines for sale in the community. Boomerang, the woodworking branch of Common Wheel was set up by two volunteers in the autumn of 2001 and is now fully developed and autonomous. The workshop is currently located at Gartnavel Royal Hospital but is set to launch out into the community at any moment with its own community facility. The materials are currently sourced from pallets but a new stream of material from windfall wood provided from the parks of Glasgow is soon to be utilised.
