Fife Council provides funding to Open Door Fife and Cornerstone togo into schools to provide information and advice to young people about housing options and issues around homelessness.
Services include: Housing information, advice, advocacy and representation for people in housing crisis; supported accommodation & housing support.
Every school in Fife has been contacted directly by the projects with teachers being asked in the first instance to discuss how the school can accommodate leaving home and housing education on their curriculum. The two projects aim to deliver sessions at all 19 secondary schools over a three-year period.
Information and advice can be delivered in a variety of formats, including talks and presentations to general classes, focussed discussions with smaller groups and talks to teachers. The projects have disseminated information on leaving home and housing education by placing resources in school libraries. This information had included SCSH’s Streets Ahead Guides.
Open Door Fife and Cornerstone also take part in school open days and induction weeks by hosting a stall with information on leaving home and housing education. The projects are building up resources to use, including leaflets, CD-ROMs and pencils, that all have details of where to get help locally.
