Bookdonors is the second organisation in Scotland to be granted CIC (Community Interest Company) status. The company is based in Galashiels and offers a new funding route for non-for-profit organisations and small charities by way of the sale of donated books through its internet shops. The types of organisations involved include social welfare agencies, disability support groups, village/town amenities agencies, sport groups, local arts groups etc. The aim is that these organisations, who will become “members” of Bookdonors, will gather together all their old (but not tatty) books. Bookdonors staff will assess each book and enter its details on the Bookdonors internet shop (which is part of the Amazon website). At least 25% of a books selling price will go directly to the donating organisation’s funds (compared with a national average of 22% from charity shops). Staff working or volunteering on the project will be local people who may have been excluded from the employment market for health or disability reasons. Bookdonor’s second objective is to provide free books to lower income families in the Borders.
