The Midlothian Befriending Scheme was started in 1990, after a steering group determined local need for people with mental health problems, and began to provide individual volunteer befrienders for adults living in Midlothian , After 1997, when additional funding was obtained from The National Lotteries Charities Board, the remit was opened to include people with any social care need. This funding also enabled befriending to take place for some people through becoming members of social integration groups run by the project. Currently MBS runs one group for people with learning difficulties.
