LETs is a great scheme that we're trying to promote here in Newton Stewart and adjoining areas because we don't think people realise how well it can work for them and how local businesses can use it too, not just individuals. For example, there's a bookshop in Wigtown paying one of its part-time staff in Crees which she then "spends" on services and products from other members. Being paid in Crees is in no way illegal, but it does save her a tax bill and it saves the shopkeeper contributions to NI, etc. When you charge for services, you can ask for part payment in Crees and part payment in sterling because we all obviously still have to pay for our gas and electric or our food shopping in hard cash, but where you can buck the system, why not!
