It is a member of LETSLink Scotland and LETSLink UK and one of several hundred LETS around the UK. LETS are similar to barter schemes, but include a members'''' trading directory and a locally recognised unit of currency. In Aberdeen, this is the Cassie, roughly equivalent to £1 sterling. Trading is conducted by direct contact between members who then notify the LETS accountant who adjusts their account balances accordingly. LETS can be regarded as complementary to more conventional trading methods, offering individuals and groups an alternative way to obtain goods and services without tying up hard cash. It can also provide a network for newcomers and isolated or unemployed people by enabling them to make contacts and gain the confidence to participate in the local community.
