Uig Pier Development Ltd – Isle-of-Skye

Profile

Rural Economic development

Notes

The community of Uig in north Skye relies on the continued existence of the ferry that runs from the Uig pier. In response to a recent threat to the ferry services the Uig Community Development Association has developed an ambitious set of aims, that include taking over management control of the pier, and raising the necessary funding to carry out repairs and improvements of the facility. The long-term aim is to redevelop the pier and its surrounds for the benefit or the local community. The UCDA has been in existance since 1999. It owns the local filling station/shop/cafe which it leases out to a local business. The UCDA are currently attempting to identify sources of income which will enable the community to employ a part-time 'Development' officer who would organise the local volunteers in doing community work.
