Notes

What's the history? The Community Mothers Programme first started in Dublin in 1988 where there are now over 170 Community Mothers visiting in over 11 Health Boards. Other programmes are operating throughout the world including the Netherlands, Germany, Canada and as far away as Australia. The first UK programme started in Tilbury, Essex in 1991 and there are now various programmes throughout the UK including Liverpool, Newcastle and Nottingham. There are none however, in Scotland so this is an exciting new development not just for Levenmouth, but also Fife and indeed Scotland as a whole. What is a Community Mum? Community Mums try and help the families they visit by helping them to build links in their local community. They help them to access services such as mums and toddlers, playgroups and local agencies such as Citizen's Advice. Community Mums don't tell parents what to do or give advice - they do however have lots of interesting information to share on everyday issues about bringing up children. Much of this is in cartoon form and is left with the parent. We are not professionals; we are volunteers and the whole concept is simply one mum helping another. We visit families for one hour per month and each visit is designed to encourage the mothers to see what they are already achieving and to discuss issues or concerns that are important to them. We help the families to explore their options and to find their own solutions.
