Notes

VABV plays a central role in assessing community needs in Barra and Vatersay, assisting the development of new organisations and projects in response to emerging needs, and to encouraging co-operation between voluntary organisations and statutory authorities to improve services and employment on the islands. In 1 January 1996 Voluntary Action became a Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee and is now managed by a Board of 12 Directors appointed by local community organisations that are members of the Company. The community newsletter produced in-house, Guth Bharraidh, is an important way of distributing information and news around the island and has also become a way of keeping islanders around the world in touch with local news and issues as they develop. Distributed from Australia to America and all around the UK the “Guth” reaches many corners of the world. Over the years, Voluntary Action has taken a leading role in encouraging the self-sustaining formation of new voluntary and community groups. An important example of organisations owing of this is the development of the Barra Learning Centre bringing a wide range of training to the island while focusing on Information Technology training programmers.
