Furniture recycling; collection and redistribution.

Notes

The Furniture Project is a registered charity based in Dick’s Hill, Stranraer that collects old furniture, restores it, and sells it on to low-income families. In a push to expand the impact it has for low-income groups, the charity received a grant from Open Scotland and now has four Internet-access computers available to the community they serve. They charge a maximum of £1 per hour to members of the public. The charity also runs an apprenticeship scheme for young people in restoring furniture and with the addition of the computer access that learning can only be enhanced as all the trainees, volunteers and staff at the charity use the computers extensively. The word is also spreading amongst the local community and more and more people are coming in to get online. If they do not have any experience of computers there are staff on hand to get them started. As Paul Smith, the Manager of the project explained, it is all about empowering people, to give them the opportunity to make use of the Internet for themselves. In January of this year the charity was short listed in the category of Best Social business in the Scottish Enterprise’s Dunfries and Galloway Business and Learning Awards.
