Scottish social entrepreneur heads to world finals of ClimateLaunchpad

Former Social Innovation Competition winner, Anthony Thomas, has secured a place at the ClimateLaunchpad Grand Final after placing in the top three at the Scottish finals.

Anthony successfully pitched his social enterprise, ECHO Shoes, to a panel of judges at the Edinburgh Centre of Carbon Innovation on Thursday 21 September.

ECHO Shoes manufacture handmade footwear with recycled leather from used chairs and used clothes materials. Anthony’s business has both environmental and social benefits: reducing waste whilst also addressing unemployment in his local area by creating apprenticeships for young and disabled individuals.

Anthony was previously awarded £5,000 to develop his idea through Firstport’s Social Innovation Competition in 2016.

He will now head to Cyprus on 17 October to pitch with the world’s best innovative low carbon start-up businesses, for a chance to win up to €10,000 and a place on the Climate-KIC Accelerator.

The Social Innovation Competition 2017 is currently open for applications. If you have an innovative solution to a social or environmental issue, get in touch and apply before 9 October.
