Bringing History to Life: How Davidson Legacy Cottage is Building a Stronger Community
As the ancestral home of the co-founders of Harley-Davidson, the cottage holds significant cultural value. However, beyond preservation, Davidson Legacy Cottage is addressing social exclusion by creating a welcoming and inclusive hub for marginalised groups.
In the quiet village of Aberlemno, a small cottage with a long history is becoming a place where people can reconnect, learn new skills, and feel part of something special.
A Home with History and Heart
Set up in December 2022, Davidson Legacy Cottage is a heritage-based social enterprise housed in the ancestral home of William C. Davidson, one of the co-founders of Harley-Davidson. While the building holds deep cultural significance, the mission goes beyond preservation. The organisation is actively tackling social exclusion by creating an inclusive hub for marginalised and underrepresented groups in the area.
“We want this to be a place where people feel welcome, where they can reflect, connect, and discover new skills. The cottage holds so much history, but its future is just as exciting.” – Nyree, volunteer co-lead
From Cottage Walls to Community Roots
Originally the childhood home of William C. Davidson, co-founder of Harley-Davidson, the cottage is now at the heart of a social enterprise with a bold mission: to preserve local heritage while supporting some of the most marginalised groups in the area.
Davidson Legacy Cottage has already begun working with groups supporting refugees, survivors of domestic abuse, veterans, care-experienced young people, and those recovering from addiction or mental health challenges. Their vision is simple: to offer a safe and inspiring space where everyone can learn, contribute, and belong.
Power by Support: The Role of Firstport
In December 2024, the team received a £5,000 Community Enterprise Grant from Firstport. It couldn’t have come at a better time.
“The grant helped us invest in a laptop and digital tools that have transformed how we work. It’s also allowed us to build our website and prepare to launch an online shop. We’ve also been able to upskill volunteers, our admin is smoother, and we’re more connected than ever.” Nyree
Nyree describes the support from Firstport as “invaluable,” especially the relationship with their advisor:
“They believed in our vision and helped us every step of the way, from legal structure to community outreach.”
When asked about the advice she would give to someone thinking about applying for Firstport support:
We would wholeheartedly encourage anyone with a social enterprise idea to apply for Firstport support. Be clear about your vision, the social impact you aim to create, and how the funding will help you achieve your goals. Don’t hesitate to reach out for guidance during the application process – Firstport is there to help you succeed!
Looking Ahead
With momentum building, Davidson Legacy Cottage is planning video tours, merchandise inspired by its unique story, and workshops that bring together history, heritage skills, and personal development.
The cottage may be historic, but its purpose is all about the future, where communities are empowered through connection, culture, and care.
